They cutted VRAM in order to cut cost and appear more competitive today. They had to compete on price/performance. Reality check: Nvidia released a compute card for gamers and had to compete with the consoles and surprisingly competitive AMD lineup. I've read the comments here: ask yourself, why are you defending Nvidia with the anemic vram amount ? Those cards will age like milk in the sun and it's obvious, only a fanboy or someone defending its purchase would say otherwise. If you've played with texture quality, you'll know that it's not a big performance hit until you run out of VRAM, yet it offers quite a good amount of image quality. In a year, baseline will have a huge step up. Specially at the dawn of a new console generation. Why am I seeing people still arguing that 8gb is a decent amount of VRAM for a card that is 2080ti calibre. You will see the consoles use 10-12gb of vram with the GPU grunt that is slower than an RTX 3070. November 2020 Next gen is releasing with 16gb of memory available. October 2020 Watch dog legion release, same as Doom. Same game that is designed to run with last gen released 7 years ago. March 2020 Doom eternal release, using more than 8gb of vram with pc settings causing performance loss for cards with less than 9gb. June 2016 AMD release a 8gb card for $240 Hopefully someone finds this story interesting so that I can justify the time I just wasted making this comment.November 2013 Last gen release with 5.5gb available for system and vram usage (1.5 for os) The game is beyond repair and has been neglected by valve and everyone else in the community. Trust me the 2005 version of Half Life Source is actually a great source port of the first game. As you might imagine, it got even worse in 2013 and as I am finding out just now, was also when they used fan made models as the HD models. They never really fixed all the problems that the update introduced and so when they updated it again in 2009, the game got even more bugs. They updated the source branch many times and I believe it was the 2007 source update that gave half life source the bad reputation it has today. But they quickly stopped paying attention to it. I've looked into the history of hl:source and you'll find that the game was pretty much exactly what it was supposed to be when it released and they fixed bugs and improved the base game with updates. Playing games that targeted 1080p on a 1080p display wont necessarily look drastically better with HD texture packs, but playing a game that targeted 720p on a 1440p. In closing: Valve has been using GameBanana content for the last seven years. Black Mesa was in some form of development since 2005 when two teams looking to make a better Half-Life: Source decided to merge into what would become the Crowbar Collective. I installed it tonight and that fanmade HEV arm texture is still there, artist's signature intact. Well, I can tell you that as of 2020, Half-Life Source is still using fanmade textures instead of the official Gearbox content. It also includes both normal and Episode Two 'hunted' variations for Alyxs face and clothing. That was the end of the conversation for the HD pack. Note: I prefer this Alyx face texture to the one included in the above pack. They pulled the world textures and left everything else. Half-Life Source came preinstalled with a GameBanana texture pack for a week until I told him. This pack included a completely fanmade set of world textures. The artist's name is in this single Steam announcement and nowhere else. To make things a little easier, I linked to a fanmade port of the pack on GameBanana.Īlfred asked no questions and immediately threw the thing into the Beta branch of the game a few days later. After all, the GoldSrc version had implemented that option in its SteamPipe update. So I suggested to Valve's Alfred Reynolds that they implement the HD pack. Naturally, I wanted to help out any way I could. ![]() ![]() In their announcement, they posted a link to their GitHub Issue tracker. The High Definition pack replaces the Glock 17 with the Beretta 92FS, as well as Half-Life: Sources Ultra High Definition pack. The story begins in 2013, as Valve begins porting the Half-Life 2 branch of Source to SteamPipe. Well today, I'll tell the story of how I made it worse.
